WHO ARE WE?

Paonia the Fire Dog

How the idea sparked

It happened on a June overlanding trip in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. Seven days exploring alpine passes and backcountry roads — surrounded by some of the best views nature has to offer.

But with fire restrictions in place, there was no campfire.
No light after dark.
No gathering.
Just crawling into the tent way too early and wishing the night didn’t have to end.

On the drive home, one thought stuck:
There has to be a better way to enjoy fire outdoors — responsibly.

The first prototype worked… kind of.
Then came more versions — more testing — Christmas gifts to friends and family — more feedback. The fire got better. The design got stronger.

What started as a workaround became a mission:
Give people a fire built for adventure.

Today, that spark is the QS-1:
Fully stainless steel, precision CNC machined, TIG welded, and made start-to-finish in Colorado. Trail-ready. Reliable. Respectful of the outdoors we love.

We build fire that lets you stay out there — longer.

FAQ

Q: What is the QS-1?

The QS-1 is a portable propane fire device built for camping, overlanding, rafting, tailgating and backyard gatherings. It delivers a clean, controlled flame without wood, embers, or ash.

Q: What fuel does it use?

Propane only.
Standard 5 lb, to 20 lb propane cylinders work as long as you use the supplied hose/regulator.

Q: Can I cook on the QS-1?

No.
The QS-1 is designed only for flame and ambiance, not for cooking, grilling, or heating cookware.

Q: How do I ignite the QS-1?

Follow the safe-lighting sequence:

  1. Confirm propane valve is OFF
  2. Light a match or lighter first
  3. Then slowly open the propane valve until ignition occurs

This prevents large flare-ups.

Q: Can I leave the QS-1 running unattended?

Never.
You must supervise the device while burning or cooling.

Fire Restriction & Regulation Questions

Q: Can I use the QS-1 during fire bans or restrictions?

Sometimes, but not always.
Propane fires may be allowed under certain restrictions (Stage 1 or 2 in some regions), but regulations vary by county, state, and land agency.

You are fully responsible for checking and following all local laws before using the QS-1.

Q: Does the QS-1 count as a “contained fire”?

In many jurisdictions, propane fire devices are considered “allowed appliances,” but this is not universal.

Check with:

  • U.S. Forest Service
  • BLM
  • State park or county
  • Local fire authority

Q: Is the QS-1 spark-safe?

Yes — it produces no embers, no sparks, and no ash.
However, it is still an open flame and must be treated as a fire hazard.

Q: Can I use the QS-1 during high wind advisories?

No.
Any strong wind can cause unsafe flame behavior and increase fire risk.

Soot, Flame, and Performance Questions

Q: Does the QS-1 produce soot?

Soot is normal with propane, especially at the base of the flame.
This gives the flame the bright campfire appearance and can be easily wiped off using the supplied bandana.

Q: Why is my flame height changing?

Likely causes:

  • Low propane in the tank
  • Temperature changes
  • Regulator icing
  • High wind

This is normal behavior with small propane appliances.

Q: Why do I smell propane when I start the unit?

A brief, small puff of propane smell during ignition can be normal.
Continuous propane smell is NOT normal — turn the unit OFF immediately and inspect for leaks.

Safety & Operation Questions

Q: How hot does the QS-1 get?

Very hot.
The metal body remains hot long after use.
Allow full cooling before handling or storing.

Q: How far should the QS-1 be from combustibles?

Maintain 6 ft (2 m) clearance in every direction — including above the unit.

Q: Where should I place the propane tank?

Place the tank upwind and at least 3 ft (1 m) away from the device.

Q: Can I run it under an awning or canopy?

No.
Only use outdoors in fully open, well-ventilated areas.

Maintenance & Care Questions

Q: How do I clean the QS-1?

Let it cool completely.
Use mild soap and water only.
Do not use solvents, flammable cleaners, or abrasives.

Q: How long does the QS-1 last on a propane tank?

Varies by tank size and flame height.
Approximate burn times:

  • 5 lb tank → ~5–10 hours
  • 20 lb tank → ~20+ hours

Actual times vary by temperature and regulator performance.

Q: Does the QS-1 require maintenance?

Minimal.
Recommended:

  • Check burner holes for debris
  • Check hose for wear or cracks
  • Perform a soap-and-water leak test before first seasonal use
  •

Warranty & Legal Questions

Q: What is the warranty?

Warranty does not cover:

  • Misuse
  • Modification
  • Overheating
  • Damage caused by failing to follow safety instructions
